Malvina has over fifteen years of experience specialising in migration and refugee law. She acts for asylum seekers, refugees and migrants in a range of matters including visa applications and cancellations, judicial review, and citizenship. Malvina also has extensive experience in the design and delivery of community legal education on refugee, migration and human trafficking issues.

Since 2019, Malvina has led and supervised the Monash University Climate Justice Clinic which provides legal advice and research support to a number of leading national organisations involved in the climate justice movement, with the aim of improving and shaping Australia’s law, policy and action on Climate Change.

Experience

  • Leading and supervising the Monash University Law School Climate Justice Clinic

  • Representing people seeking asylum, refugees and migrants before delegates of the Minister for Home Affairs, the Administrative Appeals Tribunal and in the Federal Courts, including in citizenship and visa cancellation matters

  • Involved in strategic litigation that led to the transfer of refugees and people seeking asylum in need of urgent medical treatment from offshore detention to Australia

  • Developing and delivering community legal education programs on refugee and immigration law, family violence and human trafficking issues

  • Public interest litigation matter, EWK18 v Minister for Home Affairs [2018] FCA 1212

  • Coordinating refugee and immigration legal advice services and specialist legal clinics

  • Part of the legal team behind the successful M70/M106 High Court challenge to the legality of the Government’s proposal to transfer 800 asylum seekers to Malaysia

  • Protection Officer for the Indonesian Office of the UNHCR
